“Life’s A Trip”
when did you know you were black?
A question I have been expanding on with my own personal experience. I have been disconnected from the idea of being "Black". How are we able to know ourselves if we attach ourselves to an idea that has been put on us since birth?
This piece also was inspired by the latest Candyman Directed by Nia Dacosta and Produced by Jordan Peele. I am fascinated with the idea of how black trauma is portrayed in various media and how we use that as a weapon but at the same time as our downfall. I enjoyed this idea that was played throughout the film and wanted to incorporate that into my work.
I want to challenge every " black person" out there and take a moment to ask yourself how and when did you know of the idea and how do you allow that to affect the way you do, view, and act on things in your everyday life.
