About E
E is a Moor-American artist who uses video and photos to speak about our relationship with media consumption. Their main focus of work plays on being a product of your environment and how media consumption and programming make us who we are today.
"I'm more interested in creating a dialogue, a conversation that we tap around, and that's this idea that we live in boxes or a bubble. Beyond that American bubble, internally as humans we don't feel we can be ourselves because we are already determined by society before we could ever define who we are. My work is made in layers, the same way we as people build ourselves up in layers. Rather that's from media, our friends, family, environments or what we are consuming but to fit within different environments. We are constantly adjusting ourselves to others, rather than ourselves. Being Moor, I have to live with a stereotypical idea of who I am and constantly feel I need to validate myself. Feeling lack of, through my experience of being a preacher kid,"black", "non-binary", "lesbian" I have learned that this is all apart of the human experience. We as a society don't really live to live, we more so just conform unconcisouly. Im investigating the human experience through sterortypes and forced upon environment behaviors we grow up in and constantly live in. "
My work details these layers of my life, while I explore my identities through different found footage or imagery I take that resonates with me. Going from childhood TV shows to news reports, anything that would tell me who I was before I knew who I am. I then compare to actually reality of these identies and create dialogue of imagery that creates a conversation. Visually overhwlmeing to the eyes but yet leading you to many different answers with the same theme.
